Netgear Nighthawk AX1800 WiFi range extender is a small and impactful networking device. You can connect it with ease, manage any setting in minutes via Nighthawk app & extend signals in your home.
Here, you will learn about all installation process with step-by-step guidance. So, letās start.
Netgear AX1800 Extender Setup
Find an outlet somewhere kind of close to your main router. Donāt go sticking it two rooms away just yet ā weāll move it later. You want it in range for setup.
Power it on. Takes like a minute or two to fully boot up. Just wait till the Power LED is solid. Not blinking, not red. Solid white or green depending on the model. If itās doing weird things, just let it sit a sec.
Connect to It
You got two choices here. Either:
- Use your phone/laptop and connect to the extenderās Wi-Fi. Should show up as something like NETGEAR_EXT.
- Or if youāre close to your router and donāt mind a wire, plug into the extender with Ethernet.
Go to the Setup Page
Once youāre connected to NETGEAR_EXT, pop open a browser and go to: http://mywifiext.net
Sometimes it doesnāt load. If that happens, just punch in the IP address manually: usually something like 192.168.1.250. Or check your network settings to see what IP it grabbed. If nothing loads at all, reboot the extender and try again.
Follow the Setup Wizard
Itāll walk you through a setup wizard. Pick Wi-Fi Range Extender mode (unless youāre doing Access Point setup ā but thatās a whole other thing).
Then itāll scan for nearby Wi-Fi. Pick your main routerās network ā the one you want to extend.
Type in your routerās Wi-Fi password. If you screw this up even slightly, itāll fake like it worked, then drop everything and youāll spend 10 minutes wondering why your phone wonāt connect. Trust me.
Then name your extended networks. Usually, it’ll default to something like: YourNetworkName_2GEXT or YourNetworkName_5GEXT
Let it do its thing
Itāll take maybe 1-2 minutes to apply settings, restart Wi-Fi radios. Once it’s done, itāll tell you Netgear Extender setup is complete. Your phone/laptop may get disconnected from Wi-Fi briefly ā thatās normal.
Test the Connection
Hop back on the newly created extended network. Try loading a site. If it works ā nice. If not? Donāt panic yet.
Try:
- Forgetting and rejoining the new Wi-Fi on your device.
- Rebooting the extender (yep, again).
- Checking that your router didn’t block the extender somehow (rare, but happens).
Move It (If needed)
Once itās up and working, you can unplug it and move it to a better spot. Midway between your router and the dead zone is usually best.
Watch the signal LEDs ā most of these extenders have some kind of light that shows whether youāve got a good connection back to the main router. Green = solid. Yellow/orange = meh. Red = move closer.
Netgear Nighthawk App Setup
- Before even opening the app, go to your phoneās WiFi settings. Youāll see something like NETGEAR_EXT. Connect to that. No password.
- Once you’re on NETGEAR_EXT, launch the app. It should auto-detect the extender and start setup. If it doesnāt? Force close the app, reopen it.
- Itāll scan for your routerās WiFi. Select your main SSID (the network you use daily). Enter your WiFi password.
- Then itāll ask if you want to use the same name for the extended network or set a new one. After setup, the extender reboots.
- Then you can connect with its WiFi network and enjoy the seamless speed and connectivity in your house.
Bonus Tips:
- Donāt use WPS unless you absolutely have to. It can work, but half the time itās more trouble than it’s worth.
- If you get stuck in a weird state where it wonāt connect or wonāt show up anymore, hold the reset button for 10 seconds and start fresh. I had to do this twice before it finally behaved.
- Make sure your routerās firmware isnāt ancient. Some older ones act weird with newer extenders.
End Words
The extenders are pretty much easy to connect within your routerās network as compare to any other networking device. Hope, this setup guide have helped you to complete the Netgear Wifi Extender Setup (AX1800).
